Day 1: The Buzzing Bumblebee
There are only a few physical items that I hold as closely to my heart as I do my bicycle. It's strange to think that an item can bring about so many thoughts and feelings, but my bike certainly does that. My bike still works very well, but it is 14 years old! It's been repaired and had parts replaced, but it still carried me over 1,500 miles last year! That's like biking to New York City and back!
I rode my bike this past weekend for the first time in a few weeks and it was like re-awakening a bear from hibernation. The early morning rush of wind as I peddled up the North Branch Trail was an exhilarating journey. My black, white and yellow Gary Fisher Mamba still rides smoothly, even after a few weeks of sadly being stuck in the corner of my garage. From atop my bike saddle yesterday, I spotted countless deer, ducks, and even a red-tailed hawk soaring over a grassy field!
Biking is absolutely an important part of my life and it would not be happening without my bicycle. John Wayne had his horse, Stephen Curry has Klay Thompson, and I have my black and yellow bike, whirling along like a buzzing bumblebee.

An Invitation: Today I used the strategy of writing about a familiar place/object. This is a strategy that writers use to help them generate ideas. They choose a place or an object that is important to their lives and use that a jumping off point for writing.
- What objects or places hold a special memory for you?
- Has something every happened to change or alter one of those places or objects and you had a strong reaction to it?
- Do a mental walk around your house or search through your memory and jot down a list of possible places or objects that you might write about.
